Destiny in Exile
“Destiny in Exile” explores identity and rooting. Destiny translates to “Sarnevesht” in Farsi which literally means written on the head.
Destiny borrows from the experiences of artists, writers, and musicians in exile to shed light on the presumptions based on one’s background.
Each series of portraits tells the story of the exiled individuals in Paris, reflecting on what they experienced in their home country that eventually led them to leave, and what they experience in France. (the phrases on each participant’s forehead is what they have been called at some point, and they decided to share with the viewer.)
The project aims to encourage discourse on the possibilities of integration.
The series was exhibited as an interactive installation, where the audience contributed to the narrative by sharing their experience with written messages they left behind.
